Ode to August
Daniella Parkinson
And just like that! I have devoured July to the pit
I have tempered the curdle of midsummer
And I am emerged, dizzy and unsated
Please, forgive my wine-drunk suckle
Into the hot yawn of summertime –
Drowsy August! I stagger into you
Sticky and sweat-slick inebriate
I am margarine body, gaping – and you!
You are hot and balming to wade into
Open your mouth to me!
And I will climb headfirst into the soft redness behind your incisors
And let you have the first bite
